About the department

Geography-association

The Geography Department of this college was started in the year 1986 – 1987 and upgraded to the post-graduate level during the academic year 1995-1996. In the initial stage it was at an Allied level for B.A. History and Economics as major. Later it has been converted into Major B.Sc. Geography and there was a warm welcome for this change. With effort of the Principal, Staff members of the Department, New block for Geography was inaugurated on 22.02.1993. M.Sc. Applied Geography was introduced in this college during the academic year 1995-96 with strength of twelve students. The first batch of the post graduate passed out during 1996-1997. The university committee visited to impart permanent affiliation for the course for M.Sc. Applied Geography Remote Sensing and Computer Laboratory has been inaugurated during 1996-1997 which has been established for the great benefit for the students. M.Phil. Geography course was recently introduced during the academic year 2012-2013. Both full time and part time candidates will be given admission. The Ph.D. research degree was also introduced in 2012-2013. Research findings of the staff members have been authenticated by publications.

(C) Library Profile from the year of initiation of the department, books on geography have been attached in and they were issued for students from the main library. The books have been decentralized and the books from main library have been distributed to concerned departments. From then the books purchased under UGC and non- plan funds has been maintained in the department by staff members in rotation. There are total 2,298 books on different subjects such as Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Climatology, Oceanography, Economic and Commercial Geography, Resources Geography, Population Geography, Agriculture Geography, Transport Geography, Medical and Health Geography, Books on Remote Sensing and GIS, Cartography, Spatial Information Technology, Books on Computer, Regional Geography, and Tamil version of books on Population, India, Regions of World, Minerals Resources, and Geomorphology. Certificate Course on Tourism and Travel Management was introduced in the department funded by UGC during which 91 books on tourism and relate books were purchased. There are 76 gifted and complimentary copies of books.

Journals such as The Indian Geographical Journal has been subscribed from the period 1900 (pre-dated journals), there are almost 13 Journals and 208 copies of Journals are in the Department. At present only 3 Journal are in subscription such as National Geographic, Down to Earth and Scientific American. The recent Journals are yet to be received after 2010.

At Present there are 12 M.Phil Dessertations, 111 M.Sc projects reports and Special report on Chennai is in the department library.
