Bharathi Women’s College has entered into the 55th year of glorious educational service to the population of the George Town located along the shores of Bay of Bengal, marking the beginning of northern region of the city qualified as neglected backward region. Founded in 1964 as Government Arts College for women, its quality and character was shaped by a host of dedicated Principals, Teachers as well as generation of brilliant students. This college was recognized by the UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act of 1956. The college was known for its academic standing and leadership building for women in this area from the time of inception.
During the centenary celebration of the famous Tamil poet Subramanian Bharathi in 1981-82 this college was renamed as Bharathi Women’s College. Today the college has more than 4000 students and over 150 faculty members serving in 13 different departments. The college is located in the fairly large campus of 8 Acres, nested in the crowded Gorgeous George Town the actual Chennai. This institution caters to the needs of economically and socially weaker sections of the society, especially the first generation of women learners providing curricula as well as sports and other activities.
The college conferred Autonomy in 1998 and was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1999 with four star status and subsequently it applied for re-accreditation in October 2004. A peer team constituted by NAAC visited the college and re-accredited the institution with B grade. The Autonomy status was extended for the next five years for this college for the 13 UG and 13 PG courses by the UGC team which visited the college in 2012.Third cycle of assessment by NAAC was done in 2015 and re-accredited with A status.
Research contributes content to teaching. Any quality teaching draws on quality research. Keeping this in mind, college engages its faculty in sound research by providing infrastructure and other support to promote multi disciplinary research and education in arts, languages, social sciences and basic sciences. 5 M.Phil. and 6 Ph.D. research programmes integrates the education of a diverse population of students especially; the first generation learners and the under privileged.
In a span of 50 years, Bharathi Women’s College has grown almost 100 fold and its Alumni continue to serve the society as Teachers, Scientists, Administrators, Social workers, Lawyers, Software professionals and Home makers living monuments to the spirit of the motto of this institution.
